Do you have boxes of old photos from
vacations and adventures that aren’t centered properly or that you
consider rejects? This is a great way to give them “new life” while
turning them into art elements. By cropping your photos to take away
excess sky, landscape, unwanted elements, etc., you will create a photo
that will work well in collage. You can further enhance these photos by
taking a few minutes to alter and distress them.
Note: All of my creations above were done with original
photos.

Distress and Alter
Distressing photos is fun! It can turn a recent photo into something
that looks vintage and old. Sandpaper is a great way to distress photos!
Different grits of sandpaper will yield different results. A fine
sandpaper will give a lightly scratched look where a coarser sandpaper
will give a more distressed look. With a more distressed look, you may
have slight tears and some of the photo may be removed giving it a more
worn look. You may wish to use sandpaper in one direction or in several
directions. When using sandpaper on your photos, it will create a small
amount of dust. Remove dust before adding more elements. Always work in
well-ventilated areas.
Alter photos by sanding your photos, a lot of the glossy finish is
removed which makes it much easier to add inks and rubber stamped images
to it. Drying times of inks may differ depending on types of inks used.
I prefer using dye inks as they tend to dry the fastest and give a
crisper image than pigment inks. Another great way of altering photos is
to add collage elements to it. ARTchix sells a lot of different art
elements that work very well with altering photos. These include collage
images, transparencies, ephemera, German scrap, vintage papers, etc.
Turning Altered/Distressed Photo into a
4" x 4" Collage (Chunky Book Size)
As you create these, you will come up with your own ideas and methods of
putting them together. Here are a few easy steps to get you started:
-Get all your supplies together. This includes photos to alter, collage
images, ephemera, German scrap, rubber stamps, adhesives, inks, scissors
and paper trimmer, cardstock, fancy papers, ribbons, etc.
-Cut out 4" x 4" pieces of cardstock. You will want to do this on heavy
cardstock (2 pieces may be attached together if one piece is not heavy
enough), matt board or chip board as the finished piece may be heavy
depending on what type of elements you use.
I start with my 4" x 4" piece of heavy cardstock (I use black cardstock a
lot as it makes it very versatile). I look for papers and elements that
will go with the altered photo. I temporarily place them onto the
cardstock to get an idea of a layout that will work.
Once I am happy with the layout, I start adding the elements one at a
time. Start with the bottom layer and work up. Some drying time may be
required if using liquid glue, inks, etc.
The more you create these, the easier it will become! Experiment! Play
with different ideas! Let your art show others who you are!
