Instructions for Gel Medium Transfers |
|
Cut out the ARTchix
image you want to transfer. Lay it on scrap paper and brush on a thick
coat or 2 of gel medium. Let it dry completely. Then soak in lukewarm
water for 5-10 minutes. At that point, start rubbing the paper backing
off of the image that has now transferred to the dried gel medium. Keep
rubbing the paper until you see the image showing through, being careful
not to rip the transfer. Once all the paper has been rubbed off, you may
allow it to dry again or immediately use it in your artwork, using more
gel medium to adhere it.
The images I transferred with gel medium, I then layered over hand written
or printed paper because I love that layered look. See pictures above.

Instructions for Solvent Transfers |
|
In a well ventilated
area, place image face down on paper or fabric. Apply the solvent (pick
one of the above) to the back of the image, covering completely. Burnish
the back of the image for 20 seconds. Lift a corner and see if the image
had transferred to your liking. If not, lower corner and continue to
burnish. Once the image has transferred, make sure it is completely dry
before using it in your artwork. I experimented with transferring over
all kinds of papers including book pages and parchment paper. See
pictures above.

Instructions for Water & Ink Jet Transfers |

This technique is
especially helpful if you need to reduce or enlarge your images for your
artwork. Scan your images into your computer. Modify them as needed and
print them onto glossy photo paper or transparency film using your home
inkjet printer. Once printed, cut out the image and spray it 2 or 3 times
with spray bottle filled with water. If using fabric, also spray your
fabric with water. Then place the image (image side down) on the paper or
fabric and burnish the back for 20 seconds. Lift the corner to see if it
has transferred to your liking. If not, lower corner and continue to
burnish. When the transfer is complete, let paper or fabric dry
completely before using it in your art. The fabric I used to transfer
onto was cotton muslin although I’ve also tried it with silk and cotton
linen. I stained the fabric with walnut ink then allowed to dry before
attempting the water transfer. See photos above.
