Instructions for Ornament
Backgrounds (Napkin Decoupage) |
|
1.
Decide if you want the papier
mache ornament to keep its natural beige color. If you'd like a
more colorful background, give the ornament a light
coat of acrylic paint. Coordinate the paint color with the colors
of a decorative napkin of your choice.
2. Take
off the top layer of your decorative napkin
and discard the white layers underneath (there
are normally two white layers,
I keep them to dry my paintbrush with).
3. Cut
off a piece of the top layer napkin, a bit
larger than your ornament (a quarter piece of the
napkin works for me). Make sure you have some
napkin overlapping all sides of your
ornament.
4. Brush a
layer of Modge Podge
onto one side of your ornament. Now carefully layer the napkin onto the
ornament, flattening it out carefully with your
paint brush.
5. Apply 4-5
coats of Modge Podge
onto your ornament. Make sure there are no puddles, especially in the
wrinkles.
6. With
a wet paint brush, carefully brush over the edges and
cover the sides as well with several coats. At the same time, pull
the edge a bit to remove the oversized napkin
edge. I prefer the torn edges since both sides will later
on blend more beautifully together than cut edges.
7. Set aside
and/or hang up and let dry for 20-30 minutes.
8.
Repeat on other side.

| Notes |
|
Note by Helga Strauss: I'm totally addicted to
collecting napkins after reading Belinda's technique above for
Napkin Decoupage. I use this technique in my altered books, artist
trading cards and collages. It's fabulous! Try it and you'll find
yourself buying up pretty napkins wherever you go too.
Please feel free to print
these instructions for easy reference. (Use Landscape Layout when printing this page).
