Instructions for Ornament Backgrounds (Napkin Decoupage)

1. Decide if you want the papier mache ornament to keep its natural beige color. If you'd like a more colorful background, give the ornament a light coat of acrylic paint. Coordinate the paint color with the colors of a decorative napkin of your choice.

2. Take off the top layer of your decorative napkin and discard the white layers underneath (there are normally  two white layers, I keep them to dry my paintbrush with).

3. Cut off a piece of the top layer napkin, a bit larger than your ornament (a quarter piece of the napkin works for me). Make sure you have some napkin overlapping all sides of your ornament.

4. Brush a layer of Modge Podge onto one side of your ornament. Now carefully layer the napkin onto the ornament, flattening it out carefully with your paint brush.

5. Apply 4-5 coats of Modge Podge onto your ornament. Make sure there are no puddles, especially in the wrinkles.

6. With a wet paint brush, carefully brush over the edges and cover the sides as well with several coats. At the same time, pull the edge a bit to remove the oversized napkin edge. I prefer the torn edges since both sides will later on  blend more beautifully together than cut edges.

7. Set aside and/or hang up and let dry for 20-30 minutes.

8. Repeat on other side.

Instructions for Ornament #1

1. For the background, paint papier mache book ornament with blue and burnt umber acrylic paints. Follow instructions above for Napkin Decoupage technique if desired.

2. For decorating the exterior, snip off loops from Oval Brass Tag and stamp on "noel" with black Staz-On ink. Attach with Diamond Glaze or other 3-D glue. Cut out images from Holiday Angels  and My Dear Mother collage sheets. Glue onto ornament along with Gold Angel. Stamp  "love" with gold Brilliance ink. Edge ornament with gold Krylon pen.

3. For the finishing touches, tie a bow with Hand -Dyed Ribbon - Twilight Rising. Tie on Mini Bells and "Made with Love" Tag with some gold wire or thread and attach to bow.

Instructions for Ornament #2

1. For the background, follow Napkin Decoupage technique above. I did not paint my background first. I went straight to adhering the napkin layer.

2. For the front, cut out image from White Victorian Angels Scrap and attach to ornament.  Snip off loop of Embossed Star Charm and attach to ornament using Diamond Glaze. Create a halo with red rhinestones and glue into place.

3. For the back, cut out image from Christmas Cheer Collage Sheet. Attach halo from Gold Stars Collection and Gold Wings to back of image and glue onto ornament. Snip off loop of Brass Decorative Star and glue onto ornament with Diamond Glaze or other 3-D glue. Glue red rhinestones to star and edges of halo.

4. For the side, measure a piece of Gold Star Borders to fit around your ornament and attach it with Yes! glue or Tacky Glue.

5. For the finishing touches, tie on a bow with Hand Dyed Ribbon - Red Hot. Tie on Mini Bells and "Made with Love" Tag with some gold wire or thread and attach to bow.

Instructions for Ornament #3

1. For the background, paint your ornament with red acrylic paints (not too intense!). Let dry. Follow Napkin Decoupage technique above if desired.

2. For the front, glue image from Holiday Angels Collage Sheet onto ornament. Attach Golden Decorative Corners. Glue on two red rhinestones. Tie red thread around loop of Brass Word tag and attach with Diamond Glaze. Attach star stickers.

3. For the back, paint a strip of vintage sheet music with gold Lumiere paint and glue onto ornament. Glue Gold Wings and Gold Round Frame behind  image from Holiday Angels Collage Sheet and then glue onto ornament. Glue on star from Gold Stars Collection, attach a red rhinestone and star stickers.

4. For the side, measure a piece of Gold Lace Borders to fit around your ornament and attach it with Yes! glue or Tacky Glue.

5. For the finishing touches, tie on a bow with Hand Dyed Ribbon - Red Hot. Tie on Mini Bells and "Made with Love" Tag with some gold wire or thread and attach to bow.

Instructions for Ornament #4

1. For the background, follow Napkin Decoupage technique above if desired. I did not paint my background first. I went straight to adhering the napkin layer.

2. For the front, paint a torn piece of vintage text paper with walnut ink and glue onto ornament. Cut out image from Holiday Angels Collage Sheet. Add Gold Decorative Corners and Embossed Mini Star Charms. Stamp on "joy" with black Staz-On ink. But be careful, the surface is slippery! If your rubber stamps slide, quickly wipe your stamp cleaner bottle on a few times and then wipe it all away with tissue paper.

3. For the back, paint a strip of vintage text with walnut ink and a piece of sheet music with gold Lumiere paint. Cut out image from Holiday Angels Collage Sheet. Attach to ornament and add a Gold Angel, Gold Hinge, Embossed Mini Star Charms, Retro Christmas Tree Charm and red rhinestones.

Instructions for Ornament #5

1. For the background, paint your ornament with white acrylic paint. Let dry. Decoupage snowflake napkin onto oval papier mache ornament following Napkin Decoupage technique above.

2. For the front, cut out image from Merry Christmas collage sheet and attach to ornament. Stamp on text with Staz-On ink. But be careful, the surface is slippery! If your rubber stamps slide, quickly wipe your stamp cleaner bottle on a few times and then wipe it all away with tissue paper.

3. For the back, cut out image from Merry Christmas collage sheet and attach to ornament. Stamp on text with Staz-On ink.

4. For the side, measure a piece of Gold Classic Dot border to fit around your ornament and attach it with Yes! glue or Tacky Glue.

5. For the finishing touches, tie a bow with Hand Dyed Silk Ribbon - Butterscotch. Tie on Mini Bells and "Made with Love" Tag with some gold wire or thread and attach to bow.

Notes

Note by Helga Strauss: I'm totally addicted to collecting napkins after reading Belinda's technique above for Napkin Decoupage. I use this technique in my altered books, artist trading cards and collages. It's fabulous! Try it and you'll find yourself buying up pretty napkins wherever you go too.

Please feel free to print these instructions for easy reference. (Use Landscape Layout when printing this page).
