About Heather

Introduction
I am a collage and book artist living in Vancouver, BC., Canada. Since my teens I have been interested in art and have been especially fascinated with paper, books and the art form of collage. I started by putting images and scrap paper - which I love collecting - together, which somehow seemed interesting and enjoyed seeing them come to life in a new context.

In my art history studies I learned a lot about composition, color, symbolism and historic context which influences my work. I am fascinated by the past and how images influence our view, create and distort memories and reality. I love to use original ephemera and cannot get enough of old photographs and postcards which set my imagination on fire.

Many of my collages incorporate postage stamps, scrap pieces of old letters etc. to evoke the ( imagined) feelings, memories and journeys of the often complex and mysterious path of the human heart. I am also addicted to beauty and enjoy the process of creating magic with art. l love the miniature format and most of my creations - from books to collages - are little gems no larger than 4"x5".

ARTchix Studio Products
1. Collage Sheets and Transparencies

2. German Scrap Papers

3. Vintage Papers

4. Optometrist lenses

5. Memory Frames and Flip Top Frames

Since I am such a fan of vintage images and ephemera, my favorites are by far the collage sheets and transparencies, and the vintage ledger papers. However, the variety of products and the great examples in the gallery section have inspired me to experiment with jewelry. I love the copper memory frames and square/round brass photo charms which I turned into pins, earrings and pendants.

Artwork #1: Artist Trading Tag with Frame
Title Expression

ARTchix Products
Copper Memory Frame
Microscope Slides
ARTchix Free Gift collage sheet
  Instructions
This is a card with a memory frame attached to it. The theme is creative expression and my love for mail art.

I first cut a piece of decorative paper into the format of a baggage label with scissors that create a zig zag edge. I then applied rubberstamping, original stamps and stamp stickers and colored the surface with pink and light orange chalk pastels, smudging the colors with my fingers for a soft look.

The focal point is the memory copper frame which I placed off center for a more dynamic composition. I created a small collage for the frame by rubberstamping and coloring a piece of white paper cut to fit the frame.   The collage includes an image from a collage sheet and the word "expression" which I typed on the computer, printed and glued to the collage. I sandwiched the little collage between two microscope slides and placed it inside the memory frame to which I added to pretty glass beads.

Artwork #2: Collage
Title Message in a Bottle

ARTchix Products
Loveliness collage sheet

  Instructions
The theme of travel and mail is evident again through the use of stamps and letters. I like ripping the edges of some papers and tinting the edges dark with a stamp pad to give them a more torn and aged feeling. One of the postage stamps is framed with a coin mount frame to which I applied patina solution to enhance the withered look. Finally, I glued the "message in a bottle" - a tiny glass vile with cork and a piece of paper inside - to complete the collage. Some glitter glue around the glass vile intensifies the mystery of the message hidden in the bottle.

Artwork #3: Faux Postage

Title Feeling

ARTchix Products

Lil' Duets transparency sheet
  Instructions
These are mini postage stamps made by creating tiny collages on a plain, perforated postage sheet. I glued pieces of an old green ticket with images from ARTchix collage and transparency sheets in the same color theme as the stamps and used watercolors and rubberstamping on top and around the images, in pink/red and green. The word "feeling" was glued to one of the stamps and a tiny piece from the inside of a watch was attached as a 3-d embellishment.

Artwork #4: Pendant with Mini Collage

Title La Parisienne

ARTchix Products

Small Brass Flip Top Frame
Mini Chix collage sheet
Brass Ball Chain Necklaces
Instructions
I created a mini collage with a lovely lady and hat from an ARTchix collage sheet. I cut the image around her face and shoulders and enhanced it with some glittering gold paint. I then glued the image to a piece of paper which I had colored with oil pastels and crayons. I finally slid the mini picture into a brass flip top frame and attached a gold chain to wear "La Parisienne" around my neck.

Artwork #5: Page from a Mini Collage Book
Title Book Of Memory

ARTchix Products

City Splendor transparency
Circle Pix collage sheet

German Gold Small Flower Border
  Instructions
This is a little book I created with the theme of love letters and memories of places and lovers long gone. I took a variety of little scrap paper pieces from my large collection with writing on it, stamps, collage sheet and transparency images from ARTchix, a mini tag and assembled them into a pleasing composition. I then glued everything in place and attached some German Scrap gold flowers as a border around the love letter on the top right. The mini tag with the couple on it was attached with a tiny copper brad. As a finishing touch I applied a bit of watercolor with metallic shimmer in it.
