About Lori

Introduction
Although I do not have any formal training, I have been creating art in one form or another all of my life. As a young girl, I spent hours sewing and embroidering with my Grandma Smith. Later in my childhood, I discovered the world of macramé and “knotted” my way through college. I started rubber stamping over 15 years ago, which has been the springboard for the art I love to create today.

I have had the good fortune over the years to meet and take classes from a number of talented artists who have given me confidence in my creative endeavours. When I worked for Magenta Rubberstamps, I courageously explored the use of colors outside of “my palette” thanks to the awesome team of artists there. I have also found inspiration from companies like ARTchix Studio and all of the amazing artists who so generously share their ideas on this website. (A heartfelt thanks to all of you!!) Today, I am content teaching classes and working on the design team for a stamp company. Someday I hope to author an instructional book focusing on art projects using family photos and memorabilia.

I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan with my husband Jim, our boys, Logan and Jonathan, and our friendly lab named Scout who has the biggest smile of us all. When I’m not making a total mess of my art studio, I enjoy hanging out with my boys, hiking along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, kayaking, gardening, reading, finding a good bargain, cooking, browsing antique markets, and playing with my girlfriends.

Artwork #1: Window Hanging
Title Follow Your Heart

ARTchix Products
Gold Baroque Borders
Fairy Post faux postage sticker sheet
Gold swan wings
  Instructions
Glue decorative papers on front side of paper mache heart. I used an old hymnal page that was aged with walnut ink spray and some white mulberry paper on this piece as well. Cover a photo slide mount with adhesive backed metal tape. Attach gold Baroque border trim (I stained it with a black ink pad) to bottom of slide mount. Use two-sided tape to secure little garden fairy to inside of frame. Glue “follow your heart” banner to top of frame piece and add two teal brads in upper right and left corners. Attach swan wings (I painted them silver with a krylon pen) to backside of heart before gluing on decorative paper. Use gel medium to attach alphabet twill tape around outside edges of heart. Glue mini photo holder to back of heart for hanger. Finish piece with nested button accent, copper dragonfly brad, leaf appliqué pieces, and a bit of linen behind frame piece.

Artwork #2: Mini Journal
Title My Sweet Angel

ARTchix Products
Gold Large Renaissance borders
My Sweet Angel transparency sheet

  Instructions
Lightly sand front and back of mini composition journal. Wipe cover clean before attaching decorative paper to front and back of the book. I also use decorative paper on the inside to give it a finished look. I use PVA glue to secure the paper and wrap the inside pages of the book with waxed paper to keep them clean. Mount angel transparency to decorative paper. Use black ink to age piece of Renaissance border and attach to top of angel photo. Age a piece of torn hymnal page and glue to front of book. Attach photo to hymnal piece. Cut out words “My Sweet Angel” from bottom of transparency sheet and mount on piece of tan paper. Slide words into index label and attach label to front of journal. Attach two black eyelets under label as shown. Tie black checkered bow through eyelets. Finish journal with lace bow along spine and nested flowers in right corner of picture.

Artwork #3: Wall Hanging

Title Fairy Bingo

ARTchix Products

Fairy Post Faux Postage Sticker Sheet
Silver Renaissance borders

  Instructions
Age vintage Bingo card with Distress Inks. Cut out three Bingo numbers from another card and age them slightly darker. Glue them back on the main card over three number spaces as shown. Trim face and wings of angel. Glue angel on bottom center of card. Attach fairy word from collage sheet packaging and add small strip of silver Renaissance border below one number on card. Mount Bingo card on green decorative paper which has been torn on bottom edge. Mount this piece on black chipboard. Use gel medium to attach twill “follow your dreams” ribbon and white eyelet accent. Use E-6000 to attach two black snaps to both sides of the ribbon. Finish off with white clip with a piece of thin jute tied through it with a bow.

Artwork #4: Wall Hanging

Title Always lovable

ARTchix Products

Little Sweeties collage sheet
Gold swan wings
Tell Me A Story collage sheet
Instructions
Cut four pieces of basswood ½” x 5”. Stain wood with acrylic paint and cover front of each with decorative paper. Use rusting kit to rust a heart shape cut from chipboard. Assemble frame using E-6000 in the four corners. The two frame pieces on the top and bottom will lay on top of the frame pieces on the right and left sides. Use a Japanese screw punch to punch two holes in the top right and left sides. Insert nail brads into holes and attach a hanger made from 20 gauge silver wire by wrapping the wire around the brads before they are secured. Use a Krylon pen to paint the swan wings silver. Cut a piece of ornate vellum and beige cardstock to fit the backside of the frame. Use two sided tape to secure these pieces on the backside of the frame. (Before you finish this step, attach two silver swan wings to backside of frame as shown. I wedge the wings in between the two pieces of paper. I also make the wings sturdier by gluing a wing shaped piece of walnut stained index folder on the back of each.) Collage heart using old lace, aged hymnal pages, decorative paper, "Always" word, and teal button. Glue word "lovable" on upper right side of frame piece. Mount photo of boy on teal cardstock and beige chipboard. Wrap silver embroidery floss around picture. Secure word "love" on lower right side of picture. Glue heart to inside of frame using gel medium. You should weigh it down while it dries to keep it from warping. Attach silver angel hair with picture on top of it to heart using a generous dollop of gel medium. Again, you will need to place something on the picture while it dries. Glue jingle bell garland and alphabet twill ribbon to bottom of frame. Attach beads to silver hanger using round nose pliers to add curly-cue at end of wire.
