About Paula
Introduction
My name is Paula Dion, and I am from a small town in Ohio, USA. I have two wonderful adult sons, one very patient husband, three amazing grandchildren, and one incredibly spoiled and chunky dog named Keebler. My life has been the best of times and the worst of times...what an excellent way to learn and live.

We reside in a log house packed full of antiques and vintage items, so this field of art suits me well, for it gives me more reason to acquire the ephemera that I love. My home is surrounded by many flower beds, that I really am not taking care of properly, but they seem to forgive me and keep on being beautiful. I love gardening, antiquing, reading and making art that allows me to grow in directions I did not know were within me.

I have met many talented, brilliant, and giving artists since I discovered this medium. They all inspire and support me. Thanks girls!

Artwork #1: Collage on Canvas
Title Pure Beauty

ARTchix Products
Classic Nudes collage sheet
Gold Small Renaissance Borders
Gold Small Flower Borders

Instructions
I made a similar piece to this one last year and I just loved it...so I wanted to do another piece using the same images but explore more area and use all whites ...This is my finished piece entitled "Pure Beauty".

Using a 8x10 canvas panel, I first applied a coat of white gesso and then a wash of Liquitex "Buff Titanium" acrylic paint. I then stamped using a text stamp and black ink along the right side of the canvas. I layered over that with a piece of patterned tissue paper, using Golden "Soft Gel Gloss" to adhere it and leaving in all of the wrinkles. After this dried, I applied a wash of cheap acrylic paint and using the same paint, added hardly visible circles to the right side of the canvas, using bubble wrap as my stamp.

I made the mermaids using two of the nudies from the ARTchix Classic Nudes collage sheet. I made a pattern for their tails out of a manila folder. After making a pleasing, flattering pattern, I added strips of Gold Small Renaissance Borders, starting at the tail bottom and overlapping row after row, alternating the points and trimming the rows every so often. I used Aleene's Tacky Glue to adhere the pieces of scrap, remembering to keep the curves of the tail in mind. I finished the top of the tail with a piece of Gold Small Floral Border. Mixing the white acrylic paint with Golden "Soft Gel Gloss," I applied a coat to the tails and to the Metal Filagree Frames, and wiped the excess off immediately with a sponge.

For the queen, I added cut out paper shells for her headpiece and a dress made from the text of a vintage book "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", (as are the mermaid wings). I made the necklace from a bought piece of woven jute and bead strand. I applied all of the above images and embellishments to the canvas and outlined them with a black Caran d’ache watercolor crayon, which I blended with an eyeshadow brush.

The seaweed, I made using watercolor paper and painting with different colors of white and buff acrylic paints. Some I stamped text with black ink and whitewashed over and some I sprayed on Krylon "Gold Webbing" spray. Then I cut them in a flowing manner and applied them to the canvas, adding flower shells to the tops of three strands.

To finish the piece I placed three sand dollars along the bottom and using Liquitex "Gloss Medium" over all to adhere. While the gloss medium was wet, I sprinkled diamond dust around and on the sand dollars.

I made an edging of Golden "Light Molding Paste" and rubbed on white and buff acrylic paints with my finger randomly along the edge. I coated the entire piece with a dusting of Pearl Ex "Micro Pearl" for sheen.

Artwork #2: Collage on Canvas
Title I Am Me

ARTchix Products
Flirt collage sheet
Black Mini Wings
Black Embellishments
Black Lace Borders

Instructions
I really love working in black and white and I love being a woman, so I tried to embody many of the qualities of womanhood into this one piece. The piece is titled "I Am Me" ...and if you add up the numbers on the circular pieces, that is my age (please don't count the watch face numbers, LOL). Within this 5x7 canvas is art, mystery, curiosity, loveliness, puzzlement and complexity. The watch pieces and the winged feet represent our rushed life, and the word "spoke" represents our position as part of a bigger universe.

I made this piece using images from the ARTchix Flirt collage sheet, Mini Black Wings, Black Lace Border, black and white ribbons and found papers, watch parts, one black game piece, number tags, black vintage metal measuring tape, large silver washer, one stamped mannequin body, one stamped image of the Eiffel Tower, Alphabet Stickers, and "Me" in Dymo Text. I applied all with glue.

Artwork #3: Wall Hanging
Title A Bird Family and Little Girl

ARTchix Products
Winged Cuties Collage Sheet
Copper Heishi
Instructions
The Winged Cuties are just too adorable! Using a 5x5 gesso board, I applied a page from a vintage illustrated bird book for the background. I then, lightly sanded some of the print and paper to age the appearance a little more. I then applied Lumiere "Pearl Magenta" and Golden "Chromium Oxide Green" randomly to the page, thinning down the paints with Golden "Soft Gel Gloss". I stamped numbers and text with black and coffee ink, then sanded again. To unify the piece I applied a wash of Golden "Interference Oxide Green"

I made the "nest" by weaving jute, raffia, green fiber and a twig, through a loom of jute. I glued the woven strip to the piece at the bottom and the sides, adding dried flowers and a feather to the inside.

Using the sweet little girl from The ARTchix "Winged Cuties" collage sheet, I glued her on to a piece of manila folder and cut her out. This stiffens the images. I made her hat from a piece of vintage text and added an egg to her brim. I gave the hat a wash of Golden "Raw Umber Glaze". I then attached the little girl to the nest. Using Aleenes "Paper Glaze," I applied three copper heishi to the bottom, left corner.

For the hanger I glued a twig along the top and added a jute hanger.

Title Rebecca and Isaac

ARTchix Products
Glamour Post Faux Postage
Papillon collage sheet
Black Lace Borders
Instructions
I had the cover of a vintage book that was badly damaged, so I glued it to a heavy piece of cardboard to stiffen the spine. The inside front and back were perfectly aged, so using black ink I stamped text to both sides. I felt they still needed more layering so using a mix of Golden "Soft Gel Mix" and Golden "Raw Umber Glaze," I laid down a piece of tissue paper pattern, leaving in the wrinkles. While it was still wet, I tore along the edges to give it a grungy appearance.

Using Sophisticated Finishes "Rust Antiquing Set," I distressed a pair of purchased feather wings, a piece of antique lace, 2 brown velvet leaves and a plastic doll head.

I added a cabinet card photo of a young man that fit inside the book cover perfectly. I grunged up the embossed background: first covering the image of the young man with a piece of Mylar cut to his shape and attaching it with a tiny piece of rolled tape. I then sanded the glossy background and primed it with white gesso. I finished the cabinet card background using a wash of Windsor and Newton "Buff Titanium", stamped numerical images with black ink, then sponged Liquitex "Red Oxide" and Tim Holtz Distress Ink in "Vintage Photo", and followed up with a diluted wash of Golden "Raw Umber" Glaze.

I then decided that I wanted to show a beautiful union of man and woman in my piece, so I used an image from the Glamour Post Faux Postage Sheet. I painted more Golden Glaze on her and then replaced his head with hers. I also added wings from the ARTchix "Papillon" collage sheet, a crown of vintage text, a piece of aged ribbon, and a vintage souvenir pin that I have been wanting to use. I outlined the figure with black Caran d’ache watercolor crayon. I then glued the cabinet card to the right side of the book cover.

For the left side, I used cut-out images of sparrows and baby heads, which I also glazed. I first applied the rusted lace to the bottom of both pages. Then I attached a vintage paper photo frame and added a beautiful coppery egg to the center of the opening and a cigar band across the top of the frame. I glued the birds along the bottom and added the rusted leaves and a rusty heart over them. On the outside left edge, I applied the baby heads and a piece of ARTchix "Black Lace Border". The border I had aged with Golden "Light Molding Paste" and more glaze on top.

On the right side, I attached a sage egg and "found" Rebecca and Isaac text.

I attached the rusted bird wings to the book back and rubbed Pearl Ex "Super Bronze" and "Super Russet" to the rusted doll head ...then attached her with a piece of jute over the top left wing. ..Ta Da!

Artwork #5: Collage on Canvas

Title Victoria's Original Angels

ARTchix Products
Peek A Boo collage sheet
Black Lace Borders
Black Swan Wings
My Dear Mother collage sheet
Red Swan Wings
Red Metal Roses
Instructions
I was inspired by an ad for ladies' undergarments from a vintage catalog. I could see these ladies as the original undergarment angels. All they needed were wings.

I used a 6x8 canvas panel and applied white gesso all over. When dry, I painted the entire surface with Van Gogh "Azo Yellow Deep" acrylic paint, over which I applied a wash of Golden "Raw Umber Glaze" to calm the yellow a bit. I then layered roses, text from a vintage book, images from the ARTchix "Peek-A-Boo" collage sheet, a metal vintage measuring tape, ARTchix "Black Lace Borders", and a row of models.

I added wings to the models: one set of fan wings from the same vintage catalog, ARTchix "Black Swan Wings", butterfly transparency wings, and wings made out of vintage text. I replaced one of the catalog models' heads with a head from the ARTchix "My Dear Mother" collage sheet.

I also added headpieces made out of a variety of items: ARTchix "Red Swan Wings" with a "Red Metal Rose", black feather, black floral doodad, black and white ribbon and butterfly and a red sticker rose. I also gave one of the girls a strand of pearls. In addition, I coffee stained tiny tags and stamped numbers on each one, then tied them to the angels' unbelievably tiny waists with black crochet thread. I then added one pretty vintage cut-out rose to all.
