Introduction
My name
is Terrie Lightfoot. My addiction (yes, that's what it is - a joyful addiction!) with paper
began at a very early age. I remember cutting out the paper doll from the
Sunday comic section of the newspaper every week. I thought it was wrong
that a beautiful doll only had 1 or 2 outfits, so I took it upon myself to
properly outfit her every week. I drew, colored and cut, head to toe
outfits. She was the best-dressed paper doll in town, if not the entire
state!
Fast-forward about 10 years and I'm attending collage, working on my
art degree in Costume & Lighting Design (BIG surprise!). After graduating
I was pretty burnt out and the collage loan bills had to be paid. For the
next 20 years I concentrated on my retail career and got married - leaving
little time for art. When I hit 40, I reassessed where I was at in my life
and what made me happy. Working in retail was fine, just not fulfilling to
me anymore. Art, I decided, makes me happy. Viewing it, creating it and
sharing it with others. So at 40 I started creating again and managed to
turn it into a business because you see, much to my surprise, people
actually wanted to BUY my art! So, while I still work in retail, I make
time EVERY DAY to create and play in my studio - even if it's only 15
minutes a day. Creating is as vital to my daily existence as eating.
Now I consider myself a Mixed Media/Book Artist first, Retail Sales
Associate second. I teach book making and mixed media art at several
stores and galleries in Connecticut, as well as participate in outdoor
fine art shows throughout the state and show my mixed media art in a
couple of local galleries. I am married to a career Navy man and we reside
in SE Connecticut with our 2 furry beasts (cats) who are great company
when he is deployed.

Supplies
Pocket watch casing (Optometrists Lenses work too)
Tacky Glue
Xyron 150 sticker machine
Microbeads
Scrapbook papers
Charms
Small red jewel
Gold
glitter glue
Ribbon
Instructions: Large Pocket Watch Necklace
Note: If using a pocket watch, do not bring collage right to
the edge of the backing - you won't be able to snap the front & back
together. Leave about a 1/16" - 1/8" of the back
uncovered. If using an Optometrist Lens, bring the collage all
the way to the inside edge.
Using Xyron, layer image of little girl from
Lil' Duos
Collage Sheet onto a scrap of scrapbook paper, then layer the script
transparency from
Lil' Duets
Transparency Sheet over the girl only. Trim to fit slightly
smaller than the inside of the backing. Glue onto backing with
Tacky glue. Once dry, drop into the backing some micro beads
and 2 dragonfly charms. Carefully snap into the front of the
pocket watch. If using an Optometrist Lens create your own
stiff back from chipboard covered with decorative paper cut to the
exact outside circumference of the lens. Glue collage to the
chipboard.
To cover the tiny
hole at the top of the pocket watch, glue a small red jewel over it
with tacky glue. Once dry, thread ribbon through the handle,
knot the ends together and wear it well!
Instructions:
Small Pocket Watch Necklace
Cut out image from
Circle Pix
Collage Sheet, trimming to fit slightly smaller if necessary.
Using Tacky glue adhere image to pocket watch backing. Apply a
bit of the glitter glue to the image and let dry. Drop some
micro beads into the backing with 5 of the star charms. Snap
into the front of the pocket watch. Glue last mini star charm
over the tiny hole at the top of the pocket watch with Tacky glue.
Once dry thread ribbon thru handle, knotting the ends together and
wear!

Instructions
To prepare the
canvas, from the back, slice a big X through the canvas from corner
to corner. Push through to the backside of the canvas, trimming off
excess and gluing down with tacky glue. Once dry start painting and
sponging on the paints going from lightest to darkest, ending with
the Metallic Bronze, then the VanDyke Brown Hue. Glue corners and
Purple Metal Roses as shown with Tacky Glue and set aside to dry.
To assemble collage,
start by spraying the Vintage Ledger Page and Vintage sheet music
with MoonGlow Walnut Ink. (These are beautiful walnut inks that
have Moonglow shimmer powder added to them for a gorgeous shimmer
effect - unfortunately doesn't read well in the scan). Glue image
from
Loveliness collage sheet,
Gold Large Renaissance Borders and
any other paper elements to the Illustration Board as shown with
Matte Gel Medium. Once dry, paint Satin Gel Medium over the whole
thing. Glue collage to prepared canvas. Glue tiny image from
Lil' Pix collage sheet to a piece of scrap cardboard cut to fit into the
frame and insert into the
Brass Flip
Top Frame. Poke 2 pairs of
holes through the board with an awl. Thread bits of ribbon through the holes and tie Paris
charms to
the collage. Using Tacky Glue adhere
3
Purple Metal Roses as shown to the collage. Don't forget to sign
your work!

Instructions for
Journal Construction
Paint the covers of
the book with black gesso or flat spray paint. Let dry thoroughly.
Select 3-4 PearlEx Powders to color your cover. Working in small
areas, paint PPA (Perfect Paper Adhesive), then dipping your fingers
into the Pearlex Powders, finger paint the Pearlex onto the cover
blending into the wet PPA. Continue with this until the
whole outer cover is painted with Pearlex. Once dry lightly spray
with the black and gold webbing sprays. Once this is dry, paint
over entire surface with the Interference Gold Acrylic Glaze. Using
PPA, glue the endpaper to the inside covers of the book. Smooth
down well, especially in the spine using a bone folder. Set aside
to dry flat, wrapped in wax paper, preferably under some heavy
books.
Instructions for Collaged Cover
of Journal
Paint white cardstock
with Phthalo Green paint. Then dry brush the Interference Gold &
Orange paints over it. Stamp bamboo and artist's signature in
Cosmic Copper ink and Asian calligraphy in Graphite Black ink. Cut
out geisha image from
Gentle Geishas collage sheet and glue to
prepared cardstock with Soft Gel Medium. Glue collage to black
cardstock. Cut a strip of the
Gold Medieval Border in half,
lengthwise and glue to collage as shown. Glue the Asian coins with
Tacky glue as shown. Glue collage using Tacky Glue to the dry book
cover as indicated. Glue small black cardstock circle under the
collage. Poke 2 small holes through the covers and thread silk
ribbon through, tying the "imagine" charm from a brass
word tag to the
cover.
Instructions for Sewing Pages
into Journal
Poke 3 sets of 8
holes through the spine of the book as indicated. Stack 3 pages
together to get 3 signatures. Poke one row of holes through the
folds of the pages to match the spine. Cut 3 lengths of waxed linen
thread twice the length of the book. Knot one end, thread on a
couple of small beads, thread your needle and go into the bottom
hole of the spine from the outside. Pick up the 1st signature,
sewing into it through the corresponding hole. Bring needle up and
out the next hole up, bringing to the outside of the cover. Remove
needle and thread assorted beads and Black and
Brass Heishi onto
the length of the exposed thread up to the next hole. Rethread
needle and go into the 3rd hole through all layers and out the 4th
hole. Continue beading and sewing until you come out the top hole.
Add a couple of small beads, then knot the end so the thread is as
tight as possible - I find my awl REALLY helps with this task. Do
not trim off excess. Repeat for the other 2 signatures. Once the
book is sewn together, start beading onto the excess thread to
create a 'tassel'. At the end of the tassel thread all 3 threads
through the face bead, "Made for You" tag and a
couple of Black Heishis. Knot after the last heishi, bead a couple
smaller beads onto each thread, knot off and trim the excess.
