About Theresa
Introduction
My name is Theresa Martin and I live in Arlington, Virginia, with my husband and our comical cat, Boomer. My husband is a sculptor and I indulge him in having his steel and sculptures all over our yard, while he gives me free reign in having all my collected bits and pieces for assemblage and collage inside our house!

I was raised in a Victorian house in a small town in Massachusetts where my love of things old, Victorian, and funky began!  I loved to walk around our old, historical town exploring colonial cemeteries or looking at Victorian houses with widow’s walks and other unusual architectural details. I feel very connected to the 19th century as a result of this.

I inherited my parents’ Great Depression era mentality. My early life was surrounded by things made from other things (early altered art!) and I enjoyed how resourceful my parents were.  There were always things to explore around the house – from an old tea tin of decorative buttons in my mother’s sewing room, to drawers filled with ‘recycled’ hardware pieces in my Dad’s workshop. I treasured both categories.  I have drawers and boxes filled with interesting bits and bobs that have been collected over the years. I now consider myself a recovering pack rat, because through necessity (storage issues!) I must throw some things away, and better yet I can use them in my artwork!  Is it any wonder that my artwork is more assemblage than collage? It’s in my genes!

Title Little House

ARTchix Products
Fly Over the Moon Rubber Stamp Sheet
Gold Borders
Asian Delight Collage Sheet
  Instructions
The little house began with a 4” x 7” piece of mat board with a 3” diagonal cut for the roof. The central figure is a rubber stamping from the FLY OVER THE MOON Rubber Stamp Sheet. The collage background has a face from the ASIAN DELIGHT COLLAGE SHEET, black and white papers, red decorative paper and is trimmed with GOLD BORDERS. The roof is finished with a brass embellishment and two sections of a vintage ruler.

Artwork #2: Collage
Title American Dream

ARTchix Products
Winged Beauties Collage Sheet
Winged Cuties Collage Sheet
Mini Mix Collage Sheet
Papillon Transparency Sheet
Brass Sunburst Halos
Women In Art collage sheet
Black Baroque Borders

  Instructions
American Dream is on a 4” x 10” piece of mat board. The first layer of the collage is a vintage train certificate. Over that I added a WINGED BEAUTY, a woman from the WOMAN IN ART collage sheet and a BLACK BAROQUE BORDER. I used a couple pieces of vellum – putting a transparent butterfly from PAPILLION TRANSPARENCY sheet behind them, and a woman from the MINI MIX sheet in front. I lifted up the boy from the STARS & STRIPES COLLAGE SHEET on a mounting square and placed next to him an emblem from the VINTAGE METAL TREASURES collection (my new favorite ARTchix item!) I raised a WINGED CUTIE with mounting squares and a piece of vintage ruler and gave her a BRASS SUNBURST HALO. I used a magnifier on the face of the WOMAN IN ART.

Artwork #3: Calendar
Title 2007 Calendar

ARTchix Products
Parisian Sewing Kit collage sheet
Women In Art collage sheet
Copper Swan Wings
Brass Sunburst Halos

  Instructions
This calendar began with a 4” x 11” piece of mat board with a half circle cut into the top. I layered the base with an image from the PARISIAN SEWING KIT COLLAGE SHEET, black & white checkered paper, and striped paper topped with black & white ribbons.

The second layer is a raised piece of 3” x 4” mat board with gold, black and brown decorative paper and textured light brown paper. The collage on this little platform is made with a figure from the WOMEN IN ART COLLAGE SHEET, with COPPER SWAN WINGS, and an image from the PARISIAN SEWING KIT COLLAGE SHEET folded into a fan for a collar.  Behind her is a brass embellishment and she is wearing a BRASS SUNBURST HALO that I filled with rhinestones.  The base of this layer is trimmed with a piece of a vintage ruler.

I added some metal pieces for an embellishment at the top, and printed out a calendar that I made in Photoshop using a rubber stamp font for the month and dates.

Artwork #4: Collage

Title A is for ARTchix

ARTchix Products
Black Baroque Borders

Gold Borders
Sisters and Friends Collage Sheet

Instructions
A is for ARTchix is made with two pieces of 5” x 5” watercolor paper. On the top piece I measured out a square and drew the letter A in the lower right hand corner. I carefully cut out the square and the A leaving the letter attached by the bottom right only. The A was painted and aged with alcohol inks. The top page is covered with decorative paper, edged with BLACK BAROQUE AND GOLD STAR BORDERS. On the bottom piece of paper I glued the girls from the SISTERS AND FRIENDS COLLAGE SHEET over a background of gold embossed paper. The last touch was a double punched flower fastened with a blue brad.

Artwork #5: Collage
Title Tied to the Past

ARTchix Products
This Ol' House Collage Sheet
Party Crowns Collage Sheet
Red Baroque Borders

Instructions
The main figure in Tied to the Past is from my cabinet card collection and was altered in Photoshop. This 13” by 5” assemblage is on mat board. The background is collaged with pieces of old tickets, ribbons, images from THIS OL' HOUSE COLLAGE SHEET, KIMONO KRAZE COLLAGE SHEET, PARTY CROWNS COLLAGE SHEET, and RED BAROQUE BORDERS.
The girl is standing on a key from the VINTAGE METAL TREASURES pack and she is tied with ribbon that is strung with buttons from the TREASURES pack. I painted an old skeleton key white for the bottom and edged the top with white roses. The sides are bordered with silver frame pieces.
