Collage 101: Stitching on Paper
by Helga Strauss
This is Part 3 of my Collage 101 Class. I'm going to show you a great way to add stitches to your collages.

In Part 1, I collaged our Watercolor Cards with Green and Turquoise Decorative Papers and Vintage German Letters along with white gesso and watercolor crayons. And I cut out and added my kitty photos...all with Tacky Glue.
In Part 2, I made cool Photo Charms with our Inchie Love and Mini Wishes image sheets.
Now let's add a bit of stitching! I used to cross-stitch and needlepoint so I think this is really fun! You will need an awl, cutting matt and needle and thread for this. Simply rest your collage on top of your cutting matt, then poke holes with an awl in all of the places that you want to stitch. There are lots of choices in stitches you can do, for this one, I made some x's and regular stitches.

Here I am adding little x's. I used 2 lengths of embroidery thread and it works well.

Next, I decided that I wanted to sew on some beads. So, I sprinkled them on and then poked holes with my awl in all of the places that they landed.

We interrupt this class for yet another cute kitty break...here comes Bruno! : )

To sew on the beads, you'll want to pull your needle and thread up through the hole, add the bead on and then go back down through that same hole.

Ta da! The stitching is done, the beads are in place and now how 'bout a bit of sparkle? I love this Crayola Glitter Glue. I smeared a tiny bit inside the photo charm with my finger to make it glow.
Now I need to wrap up all of my collages for an ARTchix Art Swap, wanna see what I did? Check out my class on Packaging for an Art Swap.
